Things to Consider When Choosing Premium Scans

A couple weeks ago I wrote a post on why I choose to get premium scans and what it means for me and my business. While I was writing that post I felt like I should bring up a few things to consider when making that choice.

Things to consider...

Communication is key

Getting great premium scans means you have to TELL them what you want. Your editor CANNOT read your mind. If you get premium scans back that don't quite match your vision, talk it out. This was terrifying for me starting out. I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings by saying I didn't like something. Once I connected with my editor more and more I became much more comfortable explaining what I liked or didn't like. Finding the right words to explain what needs changed can be hard at first, but I promise they love the feedback and ultimately it helps them to understand what you want. I'll say it again, they can't read your mind. When you finally find that rhythm of open communication you will reap the benefits in the form of scans requiring no further tweaks.

Cost of Premium Service

Yes Premium Scans are the most expensive option. Since I made the decision to go this route I have to consider this when I am budgeting for my business. This is an expense that is built into my business in a way that works for me. In my previous post about choosing Premium Scans I mentioned that it gives me more time. Time is money and for me and my business this is worth the investment.

What about if I have to change editors

Been there, done that. Its not as scary as it sounds and here is why. All that communication you have been having.... That gets documented. I don't know the ins and outs of how the lab functions BUT my color profile can be accessed by that new editor or fill-in (if someone is on vacation or whatever else). They have my preferences and sample images to work off and then boom, I get scans that look the way I want them! There you have it, my friends. Do what works for you and your business. Make sure you weigh your options and remember that you are never locked in. You have the freedom to choose or change your mind.
